  • While not a single landmark, the refuge’s pristine shoreline, encompassing beaches, dunes, marshes, and maritime forests, is a defining feature visible from the Chincoteague Channel, Assateague Channel, or Atlantic waters. Spanning over 14,000 acres, it’s home to the famous Chincoteague wild ponies, which you might spot grazing in marshes like Black Duck Marsh from a boat. The refuge’s untouched coastline and wildlife, including dolphins and shorebirds, are highlights on water-based tours.
• Chincoteague Wild Ponies
  •  The wild ponies, iconic due to Marguerite Henry’s Misty of Chincoteague, roam Assateague Island and are often visible from the water, particularly in marshes or near the shore along the Chincoteague or Assateague Channels. Our crew will help you map out your day based on your desired activities such as cruising, swimming, fishing, crabbing, sightseeing, etc. You can bring water floats or activity equipment to enjoy your day on the water!

We recommend some boating experience. If you do not have any, we will teach you everything you need to know upon arrival to safely operate the vessel. Please note that you are liable for any rental damages to the vessel.

If you do not have a boater’s license, you can complete a state approved boater’s education course upon arrival in addition to a safety overview and questionnaire.
